What memories do these blankets hold?
They are the objects that sit in the background of our lives, draped over a chair or folded at the end of a bed. They absorb the rhythms of daily life and the ups and downs of years gone by. For many Canadians, they become cherished reflections of special moments in time, itchy wool and all!
This collection emerged from a period of deep introspection, a season of questioning, unravelling, and ultimately reclaiming my own sense of clarity and strength. The iconic Hudson Bay Company (HBC) blankets became a way to explore the tensions and comforts held within intimate relationships. The coloured stripes, folds, textures, and shifting light stirred feelings of family, nostalgia, and belonging, but also the friction and complexity that exist within the relationships that shape us. The blankets became a language for these experiences, holding softness and tension, comfort and struggle, at the same time.

As the work developed, the folds and movement of the blankets began to echo the prairie landscapes I grew up with: rolling fields, soft foothills, distant mountains, and the emotional highs and lows that mark a life in motion. These references surfaced not as literal depictions, but as echoes of an inner landscape.
The paintings suggest a sense of interconnectedness, distinct forms moving alongside one another, shaping and reshaping a shared space. Through the sculptural qualities of the blankets, the paintings explore how our experiences are shaped by the people, places, and histories that surround us.
Reflections of a Canadian Experience
Woven through the work is the legacy of the iconic Canadian HBC textiles: the beauty and weight of tradition, the warmth of the physical blankets, and the complicated history they carry. While this history is not the central subject, it reflects many of the same dualities present in the emotional terrain that inspired this collection.
Ultimately, these paintings explore connection and separation, weightlessness and gravity, softness and tension, and the many dualities that exist within our lives.
The Between The Folds collection of watercolours are meditations on memory, perspective, and seeing the light, whether in the moment or in hindsight. They consider how relationships, landscapes, and histories leave their mark on who we become, and remind us that things open, settle, or gather in their own time, trusting that they fall together perfectly and inevitably, just as they are meant to.
